Principal’s Message

Greetings Stinger Family!

It is my pleasure to serve a second year as the principal at Short Pump Elementary School! Last year was an exciting one! Excellent teaching transpired. Meaningful learning took place. Students grew in character, leadership, and knowledge. Fun activities occurred. We gave back to our community through various service projects, and I had my first child – a little girl! Yes, last year was indeed exciting.

For those of you who are new to our Hive, let me share a little about my background. This year will be 14th in my educational career. I began in Petersburg as a 6th grade science teacher. The following year, I came to Henrico County Public Schools as a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science teacher at L. D. Wilder Middle School. I earned my Masters (M.Ed.) in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University during my time there. Practically upon graduation, I became the assistant principal, then the associate principal at H. M. Ratcliffe Elementary School. Afterward, I transferred to Twin Hickory Elementary School as the associate principal. Two major milestones occurred during my time at Twin Hickory Elementary. I earned my doctoral degree in education (Ed.D.) from Virginia Commonwealth University, and I got married! In each experience, it has been a joy collaborating with others to contribute to positive changes with my students and school community.

As principal, I enjoy partnering with our families to create a relevant yet fun learning environment for our students. Our theme for the 2018-2019 school year is “Bee the Change: Making A Difference” as inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s quote: Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Throughout this school year, we make a difference by educating and developing our students as thinkers, leaders, and good citizens to their community and beyond.

I am confident that as we purposefully work together, we will make the 2018-19 school year one that inspires the kind of growth and development that we “wish to see in the world” within our students and our school community. I look forward to working with you to make this year a great one!

Educationally yours,

Sarah E. M. Slaughter, Ed.D.
